Scamper - The Movie

Over the past year, I have been inundated with questions from friends and fans about the upcoming movie "Scamper".  It is for this reason that I will be devoting this new page entirely to the movie.  As I receive updated information, I will share it with you on this page. -Charmayne

New Line Cinema is gearing up to bring to the big screen the true story of the most successful female barrel racer in history. The studio is developing “Scamper”, a feature film about the life of champion rider Charmayne James.

Jeanne Rosenberg, who has penned several successful horse-related films, including the 1979 classic “The Black Stallion”, has been selected to pen the script.

Titled for the name of James’ champion horse, “Scamper” will revolve around the relationship between James and her horse and culminate with her being crowned World Champion Barrel Racer for the first time in 1984 at age 14. The story will focus on how Scamper was considered an unridable horse until trained by James, who then went on to win 11 championships, including ten straight on Scamper.

There are no producers attached to the project, which is being overseen by New Line production executives Chris Godsick and Mark Kaufman.

In addition to penning “The Black Stallion”, Rosenberg recently scripted the large format prequel “The Young Black Stallion” for the Walt Disney Co. and has written such features as “White Fang” and “The Journey of Natty Gann.”

Rosenberg is represented by the Gersh Agency.

While conducting a clinic at the DLR Ranch in Temecula, CA, Charmayne and her clinic staff were visited by Chris Godsick of New Line Cinema and Jeanne Rosenberg, the story writer.  During their visit, some of Charmayne's insiders were able to get the latest scoop on the movie.  When asked about the movie production's progress, Chris said...." Well, let me put it in your terms.  We've sucessfully made it around the first barrel and are headed for the second.  If all goes as planned, maybe we can expect to see a finished production within the next year".

Chris was told that the most prevailing question from fans is...who will play the part of Charmayne..and how will the actress be selected ?  According to Chris, the tentative plans are to have a National Casting Call.  This would enable anyone who may be interested to audition.  So, all you little cowgirls start getting ready to audition for the part of Charmayne.

Chris Godsick, the New Line Cinema executive in charge of the movie production was in Athens, TX last month to attend my wedding. This gave me the opportunity to get an update on the movie.  Chris assures me that everything is on track, but that "Hollywood" moves at a very slow pace.  Currently a director is being sought and once he/she has been hired, the ball should really start rolling.  The story has already been written.  Jeannie Rosenberg, the writer, did a fantastic job with this.  I have reviewed it and only suggested a few changes.  I think you will really enjoy the story once the movie is completed.

I get email inquiries daily asking about casting for the movie.  I've also received tons of pictures from little blond headed cowgirls who want to play the part. Let me remind you that casting will be up to the professionals at New Line, not me.  But Chris has assured me that once a date has been set for auditions, I will be notified well in advance so that I can post that information here.  So, if you think its too late, don't worry, you havn't missed anything.  Just keep checking back here and as I know more, I will post it.
